Design is purty.

The new CA Design Annual just came out. It’s one of my favorite award books of the year. Maybe it’s because I’m a writer and design is not something I do, but definitely something I appreciate.

I can’t think of anything that communicates as quickly as strong design. It’s so immediate. It penetrates the soul. Design, good design, makes words obsolete. That’s a little hard for a writer to say, but I believe it’s true. I also believe we have one of the best design departments in the country – including that talents of MDFX.

Below are several examples of great design from the CA DESIGN ANNUAL:

Nice examples. The CA design issue is one of my favorite printed pieces of the year. I've always been a big fan of "good writer + good designer = good concept well executed." You see a lot of "good writer + art director with average execution skills = good idea poorly executed" kind of work sometimes. Hal Curtis wrote a great piece in C.A. a couple years back about it.

One of the nice things about being in an agency like Barkley is we get to see a lot of both sides being done well. I enjoy not being able to decide if something is more design based or ad based, but instead I think it's a good idea done well.
